Are you looking to experiment with a whole new form of improv? Come try Playback Theater!
Done in over 80 countries, Playback Theatre invites audience members to tell true stories which
performers then act out instantly. Rather than using the audience story as a suggestion, the
actual story is “played back”, using scenes as well as abstract movement, music, poetry and
pieces of cloth.
As a workshop participant, you will both tell stories and learn techniques for acting out the
stories of fellow participants. These stories are sometimes funny, but might also be tragic,
uplifting, or just plain ordinary.
The gift of doing playback together is that common experiences begin to weave through the
tellings, building and strengthening our connections to each other as a community. It enables
us to see each other in a new, often more compassionate light, especially across differences of
background, experience or values.
Playback Theatre was developed in 1979 by teacher, actor and innovator Jonathan Fox.
Rosey Waters has been an actor and improvisor for over 35 years. She was a member of
Boulder Playback Theatre for 4 years and since 2019 has been director and actor with Red
Thread Playback Theater, an international online company.
Rosey has been trained in Playback Theater, including workshops with Playback founder,
Jonathan Fox. As an instructor, her teaching credits include: Playback classes for high school
students and co-teaching an international online class, “Acting Tools for Playbackers”. Recently
she facilitated an in-person full day workshop, “Acting and Conducting for the Deeper
Story” for Cork Playback Theater in Ireland. She has been chosen to present a workshop at the
International Playback Theater Network’s upcoming conference in South Africa.
Rosey has also been seen at Rise Comedy as part of the musical improv duo, Too Intense. She
facilitates and role plays for projects teaching communication skills to police officers and
medical students. For 32 years, Ms. Waters has been a teaching artist with a focus on teaching
educators how to use theater to teach their curriculum.
