Late Night Crash Course

In this two-session class, late night writer Nicole Conlan will teach you the skills needed to thrive in a late night writers room. We’ll cover monologue jokes and structure, researching stories, writing in a host’s voice, desk bits, sketches, and more. We’ll also discuss the differences between writing standup material and late night monologues and how to adapt your skills for YouTube or TikTok content. You’ll also pick up the most valuable tool a late night writer has – the ability to write FAST. By the end of the class, you’ll have material you can adapt for nearly any late night packet that rolls through your inbox or, even better, that you can film on your own. NOTE:A laptop is recommended but not required for this class.

Nicole Conlan is a Peabody- and WGA Award-winning comedian and writer who currently writes for The Daily Show. Previously, she wrote for The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, for which she was also nominated for 3 Emmys. Nicole also writes for the YouTube series Climate Town and Not Just Bikes. She’s been staffed at websites like Sports Illustrated, Jalopnik/Gawker, and SB Nation, and has performed on multiple UCB teams. Nicole is a Denver native and she’s excited to bring her skill set to the scene back home.
