Improvise Like An Actor: Building Stage Presence In Your Improvised Scene Work

This workshop will teach improvisers how to apply theater and acting techniques in order to amplify their stage presence during improvised scene work. Students will become more grounded and confident on stage, more connected to their bodies, and will learn to give greater weight to the offers they make onstage during improv sets.

We’ll practice skills such as:
  • Dynamic vocal work, effecting your scene partner through your words
  • Physical grounding and specificity/intentionality of movement
  • Attention to stage picture and kinesthetic response

This workshop is geared towards those who are maybe more comfortable with improv basics, but have less theater/performance experience and want to learn some basic performance technique. More generally, it will benefit improvisers of all levels who desire to heighten their presence as a performer.

Melissa Schenter Connor hails from the Pacific Northwest, where she earned a theater degree from Western Washington University. She has performed original plays at a wide range of Fringe Festivals, including in Edinburgh, Scotland, most of the Canadian Fringe circuit, and at an American Chemical Society National Conference. Besides improv, she has training in Viewpoints, Devising, Forum Theater, Musical Theater, and Commedia dell’arte. She is a member of a number of improv teams in the Denver Metro Area, including Barkley, Too Intense, Waiting Room, and Sexy Goblins. While not on stage, she can be found doing illustration and graphic design, playing board games, reading fantasy and sci-fi books, and talking to her cats.
