Chad Damiani’s The Language of Nonsense

What does it mean to be a modern clown? The art form has experienced a huge resurgence – as shows seek to take bigger risks, explore their most fun ideas and create deeper connections with the audience. The work is an exercise in contradiction. The clown is a harbinger of mischief, defiance and danger; while also a purveyor of joy, kindness and connection. Clowns present their dumbest ideas, while connecting to audiences in a deeply profound way.Chad is back in Denver to share more about this wonderful art form, bringing his brand-new intensive — THE LANGUAGE OF NONSENSE. This one focuses on how we communicate and create games with the audience. There are no red noses, costumes or props. Through games and unique exercises, we will break down the process of translating your most joyful and dumbest impulses into a vocabulary an audience can not only understand, but embrace as an enthusiastic collaborator.

This intensive is good for all levels of performer — or people simply curious about this work! You do not have to have taken Chad’s previous intensive SAVE THE SHOW to get the full benefit of this weekend.

Chad Damiani is a pioneer of LA’s modern clown scene. His journey began over 25 years ago as an announcer for World Championship Wrestling – where he learned from the greatest physical storytellers in the world. He has studied with some of clown and improv’s best instructors, was a founding member of The Murge (an ensemble directed by former Cirque Du Soleil frontman John Gilkey) and has performed over 600 shows with his comedy duo Jetzo, bringing clown work to traditional improv venues. Those collaborations have led to a number of clown-inspired TV projects, an appearance on America’s Got Talent and regular work with the Vegas-based circus powerhouse Spiegelworld. He runs and performs in CLOWN ZOO – a theatrical mask show that draws big crowds for both family-friendly outdoor shows and a racy late night slot at The Elysian Theater. He’s also the host of the hit show STAND UP AND CLOWN – where he ruthlessly directs well-known stand-ups through a grueling gauntlet of clown.
