Building Character and Game Through Obsession
Most great comedy characters are obsessed (or at least comically preoccupied) with something. The closer the obsession is to the character’s core — the more it says about their insecurities, delusions, passions, values, etc. — the funnier it’s likely to be. In this workshop, we’ll explore the idea of obsession in improv and use it to quickly build characters and discover scenic games. Recommended for intermediate to advanced players.
Alex Nichols has been improvising since 2005, when he founded his high school’s improv team. In Chicago, he was a member of several Harold teams at iO and performed at theaters around the city including The Playground, the Annoyance, and CIC, where he co-produced a weekly show with his independent team, Law Dog. He now performs regularly at RISE Comedy as a member of the shortform team Laugh Track and as one half of the longform duo Wrong Matt.
